How to Start an SMM Reseller Business with an API Provider: A Complete Guide (Setup, Margins and Risk)
An SMM reseller business is simple on paper. You set up a panel, connect it to a provider through an API, add your own prices and sell Instagram services. Each order is forwarded to the provider, the provider delivers it, and you keep the difference.
The resellers who last understand the whole chain: how money moves between balances, what happens when an order is only partly delivered, and which rules they must pass on to customers. This guide covers it step by step, with margin calculations based on a real price table. We use STAR SMM Panel as the example provider; the process is the same with any provider that offers a standard SMM API v2.
Part 1: How SMM reselling works
The provider and reseller chain
An SMM panel is a website where customers buy social media services. Most panels do not produce services themselves; they forward orders to providers automatically. A reseller is a panel owner whose orders are fulfilled by someone else.
- Your customer tops up a balance on your panel and places an order, for example 1,000 Instagram followers.
- Your panel charges the customer your selling price and sends the order to your provider through the API, using the provider service that is mapped to your service.
- The provider charges your provider balance its own price, delivers the order and reports status back through the API.
- Your panel checks the status regularly and updates the customer's order: in progress, completed, partial or canceled.
Two balances are involved, and keeping them apart is a reseller's most important habit. Customers hold balances on your panel; you hold a balance with your provider. A customer payment does not change your provider balance, but every sent order reduces it. If it runs out, customers can still pay you, but their orders cannot be fulfilled.
Chains of resellers
Some providers are themselves resellers of other panels, so an order may pass through several panels before it reaches the source. Each step adds a margin and another point where service details can change without notice. Where possible, connect to a provider that runs its own services. On STAR SMM Panel, the Instagram services are run by the panel itself, and service IDs never change, which keeps your mapping stable.
Part 2: Choosing a niche
A new panel that tries to sell everything competes with large, established panels on price alone. A narrow niche, defined by platform, country, language or buyer type (local businesses, agencies, creators, other resellers), gives you something specific to say to a specific group of buyers.
Example niche: country-targeted Instagram
Many buyers care about where engagement comes from. A café in Istanbul or a fashion shop in São Paulo usually wants engagement that looks like it comes from their own market, and agencies with clients in one country have the same need.
On STAR SMM Panel every service targets exactly one country, and there are no worldwide or mixed services. Orders are delivered by accounts with a profile that matches the chosen country, registered with that country's phone numbers. For the two regional groups (Arab countries and Africa), phone numbers come from countries in that region. The 16 options are India, United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, Mexico, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Colombia, South Korea, Egypt, Vietnam, Arab countries and Africa, across 10 categories: Followers, Likes, Reels Views, Post Impressions, Post Saves, Post Shares, Profile Visits, Custom Comments, Emoji Comments and Comment Likes.
A reseller could build a whole panel around a few of these markets, for example a Spanish-language panel selling Mexico, Colombia and Spain services.
Part 3: Panel software options
You need software that handles customer accounts, balances, an order form, provider connections and status syncing. There are two broad options.
| Option | How it works | Good for | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted SMM panel script | You buy or license panel software and install it on your own server and domain. | People who want full control over design, code, hosting and data. | You handle hosting, updates, backups, security patches and the payment gateway setup yourself. |
| Hosted panel service | A company runs the panel software for you, usually for a monthly fee, on your own domain. | People who want to start quickly without managing a server. | Monthly cost, limits on customization, and dependence on the hosting company. |
Whichever option you choose, check these features before committing:
- Standard SMM API v2 providers (URL plus key), including
cancel. - Bulk service import with editable names, categories and prices.
- Automatic status syncing and refunds for Partial and Canceled orders.
- A "custom comments" service type (one comment per line).
- Payment gateways and languages that suit your target market.
Part 4: Connecting a provider with SMM API v2
The SMM API v2 format is the common language between panels: one URL, a key parameter and an action parameter. Because most panel software understands it, connecting a provider usually takes a few minutes. Menu names differ slightly between panel software, but the steps are the same.
Step 1: Get your API key
Create an account with the provider and find the API key. On STAR SMM Panel there is no email or password: you receive one account token at sign-up, and an API key is created automatically at the same time. The key is shown masked in the dashboard. Store the account token safely, because it cannot be recovered or reissued.
Step 2: Add the provider
In your panel's admin area, go to Providers > Add provider and enter:
- API URL:
https://star-smm-panel.com/api/v2 - API key: your key from the provider dashboard
Most panels test the connection by calling balance. On STAR SMM Panel, services, balance, deposit and deposit_status work even with a zero balance, so you can connect and build your catalog before you top up.
Step 3: Import services
Your panel calls the services action and shows the provider's list. Each service comes with an ID, a name, a category, a rate per 1,000, a minimum and a maximum. A request looks like this:
POST https://star-smm-panel.com/api/v2
key=YOUR_API_KEY
action=services
Import only the services you plan to sell. A shorter catalog is easier to price, easier to support and easier for customers to read.
Step 4: Map service IDs
Each of your services points to exactly one provider service ID. Keep a simple sheet with your service ID, provider service ID and provider rate for pricing reviews and support questions. Because STAR SMM Panel service IDs never change, a mapping you set up today keeps working.
Step 5: Name your services
API service names are in English, for example "Instagram Followers [South Korea]". Keep, translate or rewrite them, but include the platform, service type and country, and nothing you cannot back up. Avoid words like "real", "lifetime" or "non-drop" unless your provider's written rules support them.
Step 6: Build categories
For a country-focused panel, group either by country first ("Brazil: Instagram", with services inside), which suits buyers serving one market, or by service first ("Instagram Followers", with one service per country), which suits agencies comparing markets.
Step 7: Set minimum, maximum and descriptions
Your minimum must not be lower than the provider's minimum, and your maximum must not be higher than the provider's maximum, or orders will be rejected. On STAR SMM Panel the minimum is 100 for every service. The maximum is 100,000 for most services and 1,000,000 for Post Impressions and Profile Visits.
In each service description, state the link type. Followers and Profile Visits need a profile (instagram.com/username, @username or username). Every other service needs a post or Reel link (instagram.com/p/CODE or instagram.com/reel/CODE, also /reels/ and /tv/). Custom Comments take one comment per line, and the number of lines is the quantity. Through the API, that service is ordered with comments instead of quantity, so check that your panel software supports it.
Step 8: Place a test order through your own panel
Before selling, create a customer account on your own panel, add a small balance and order the minimum. This checks the whole chain: your order form, the mapping, the provider order and the status sync. The request your panel sends will look like this:
POST https://star-smm-panel.com/api/v2
key=YOUR_API_KEY
action=add
service=SERVICE_ID
link=https://www.instagram.com/username
quantity=100
Part 5: Pricing and margin math
Your selling price is usually the provider rate multiplied by a markup. Most panel software lets you set a percentage markup for all services at once and then override individual services.
The basic formulas
- Selling price per 1,000 = provider rate per 1,000 x markup
- Profit per 1,000 = selling price minus provider rate
- Order cost = rate per 1,000 x quantity / 1,000
- Gross margin = profit / selling price. A 2x markup gives a 50% margin. A 3x markup gives about 66.7%.
Worked examples per 1,000
These use STAR SMM Panel rates from the October 2026 price table (USD per 1,000).
| Service | Markup | Cost per 1,000 | Sell per 1,000 | Profit per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Followers, United States | 2x | $1.2004 | $2.4008 | $1.2004 |
| Followers, United States | 3x | $1.2004 | $3.6012 | $2.4008 |
| Followers, India | 3x | $0.1981 | $0.5943 | $0.3962 |
| Followers, South Korea | 2x | $5.6551 | $11.3102 | $5.6551 |
| Likes, Japan | 2x | $1.5400 | $3.0800 | $1.5400 |
| Reels Views, Brazil | 3x | $0.0462 | $0.1386 | $0.0924 |
| Post Impressions, United Kingdom | 3x | $0.0121 | $0.0363 | $0.0242 |
| Custom Comments, any country | 3x | $0.2200 | $0.6600 | $0.4400 |
Worked examples per typical order
Per-1,000 prices hide how small or large a single order is. Here is what typical orders look like in real money.
| Order | Markup | Your cost | Customer pays | Your profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 Followers, United States | 2x | $1.2004 | $2.4008 | $1.2004 |
| 1,000 Followers, India | 3x | $0.1981 | $0.5943 | $0.3962 |
| 2,000 Followers, South Korea | 2x | $11.3102 | $22.6204 | $11.3102 |
| 500 Likes, Japan | 2x | $0.7700 | $1.5400 | $0.7700 |
| 10,000 Reels Views, Brazil | 3x | $0.4620 | $1.3860 | $0.9240 |
| 50,000 Post Impressions, United Kingdom | 3x | $0.6050 | $1.8150 | $1.2100 |
| 200 Custom Comments, United States | 3x | $0.0440 | $0.1320 | $0.0880 |
What the numbers tell you
- Cheap services need volume or a higher markup. A 3x markup on 1,000 India followers earns under $0.40. Very low-priced services such as Post Saves ($0.0012) and Post Shares ($0.0003) earn fractions of a cent per small order, so many resellers use a higher markup on them or set a minimum charge per order in their panel.
- Higher-priced markets earn more per order at the same markup. One 2,000-follower South Korea order at 2x earns more than twenty-eight 1,000-follower India orders at 3x.
- Subtract your own costs. Payment gateway fees, hosting or panel subscription, and your time all come out of the gross profit. If your gateway takes 3% of what customers pay, a $2.4008 sale leaves about $2.3288 before the provider cost.
- Round for display, calculate with decimals. Customers find $2.40 easier to read than $2.4008, but keep enough decimals in the rate so small orders are charged correctly.
Check competitors in your niche before settling on a markup. The goal is a price your target buyers accept, not the highest multiplier possible.
Part 6: Keeping your provider balance funded
Every order your customers place is paid from your provider balance. If it runs low, orders fail to send and customers wait.
How top-ups work in this example
STAR SMM Panel accepts USDT on the TRON network (TRC20) only. The minimum top-up is 10 USD, with quick amounts of 10, 100, 300, 500, 1,000 and 2,000. Each request gets a new TRON address and an exact amount with 6 decimals, for example 100.482913. The decimals identify your payment, so it is credited automatically, usually within 1 to 2 minutes. A request is valid for 60 minutes, one can be pending at a time, and each has an 8-character code (for example K7Q2M9XD) to quote to support. Top-ups can also be automated through the API with deposit and deposit_status. Avoid two mistakes: sending on a network other than TRC20, and sending a rounded amount.
How bonus tiers change your margin
Larger top-ups include a bonus on STAR SMM Panel:
| Top-up | Bonus | Balance received | Effective cost per 1 USD of balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 USD | +5% | 315 USD | about $0.952 |
| 500 USD | +7% | 535 USD | about $0.935 |
| 1,000 USD | +10% | 1,100 USD | about $0.909 |
| 2,000 USD | +15% | 2,300 USD | about $0.870 |
Worked example. You sell United States followers at $2.4008 per 1,000 (2x markup). Without a bonus, each 1,000 costs you $1.2004 and you earn $1.2004, a 50% margin.
- With a 1,000 USD top-up (+10%), your real cost per 1,000 is $1.2004 / 1.10, about $1.0913. Profit rises to about $1.3095 per 1,000, a margin of about 54.5%.
- With a 2,000 USD top-up (+15%), your real cost per 1,000 is $1.2004 / 1.15, about $1.0438. Profit rises to about $1.3570 per 1,000, a margin of about 56.5%.
The bonus only helps if you spend the balance. Provider balances cannot be withdrawn, so grow into the higher tiers as your sales grow.
Part 7: The order lifecycle and status syncing
After an order is sent, your panel must keep asking the provider how it is going and reflect that to the customer. Orders move through Pending, Processing and In progress, and end as Completed (no refund), Partial (refund the undelivered part to the customer) or Canceled (refund the full charge).
What the status response contains
A status request on STAR SMM Panel returns charge, start_count, status, remains and currency as in the standard format, plus progress (percent delivered) and delivered (quantity delivered). Remaining quantity is synced every minute.
POST https://star-smm-panel.com/api/v2
key=YOUR_API_KEY
action=status
orders=1001,1002,1003
You can check one order with order or up to 100 at once with orders. Batch requests matter at scale: with 1,000 open orders, checking in batches of 100 needs 10 requests instead of 1,000, which keeps you far inside the limit of 300 requests per minute per key.
Cancel
On STAR SMM Panel any running order can be stopped, on every service, and cancel accepts up to 100 order IDs. If the order had not started, it is fully refunded and ends as Canceled. If it was in progress, the undelivered quantity is refunded and it ends as Partial. Refunds go to your provider balance automatically.
Passing refunds on to your customers
When the provider refunds you, you must refund your customer at your price, not the provider's. Most panel software does this automatically when it syncs a Partial or Canceled status, but check it with a test order.
Worked example. A customer orders 1,000 United States followers at your 2x price of $2.4008. The order ends as Partial with 300 remaining.
- The provider refunds you 300 x $1.2004 / 1,000 = $0.3601 (rounded).
- You refund the customer 300 x $2.4008 / 1,000 = $0.7202 (rounded).
- For the 700 delivered, the customer paid $1.6806 and you paid $0.8403, so you keep $0.8403 profit.
Refunding only the provider's amount underpays the customer; refunding the full charge loses you money. The same logic applies when an account turns private during an order: STAR SMM Panel stops the work and refunds the remainder to your balance, and your panel should refund your customer at your price.
Part 8: Support policies you should write
Your customers will ask the same questions again and again. Write the answers once, in your FAQ and service descriptions, and make sure they match your provider's rules. Never promise more than your provider delivers: if the provider has no refill, you cannot offer refill.
Drops
Explain why counts can drop and what happens. With STAR SMM Panel as provider, a matching policy would say: there are no refill services; when counts drop because delivering accounts hit an Instagram security check (a challenge), an automated system recovers those accounts and the counts come back; selfie verification is also handled automatically but recovery can take up to 3 hours; permanently banned accounts are hard to recover.
Refunds
State that undelivered quantity on Partial and Canceled orders goes back to the customer's panel balance. Your provider balance cannot be withdrawn, so cash refunds to customers would come out of your own pocket.
Private accounts and links
State that the account must stay public until the order finishes, and list the accepted link for each service type. A profile link on a likes service, or a post link on a followers service, will be rejected by the provider.
Other points worth stating
- Gender: random, roughly 40% male, 40% female and 20% unspecified.
- Cancel: whether customers can stop orders, and what they get back.
- Passwords: never needed and never accepted. Only a public link.
- No speed promises: do not publish delivery times you cannot control.
Keep each customer order ID linked to the provider order ID, so you can open a provider ticket with that ID or the top-up code when needed.
Part 9: Risk management
Top up in stages
Because provider balances cannot be withdrawn, top up based on expected sales, not hope. Start small, watch how fast you spend it, and move into larger bonus tiers only when your volume justifies it.
Keep the balance above zero
On STAR SMM Panel, when your balance is zero only services, deposit, deposit_status and balance work. That means add, status and cancel also stop, so your panel cannot send new orders or sync existing ones. Set a low-balance alert in your panel, or check balance on a schedule, and top up before you reach zero.
Test with 100-unit orders
For every new service you add, place one minimum order of 100 first. Record the start count, watch the progress and remains, and test cancel on a second small order. Only then open the service to customers.
Protect your keys
- Anyone with your API key can spend your provider balance. Never put it in screenshots, chats or public code.
- On STAR SMM Panel the API key can be regenerated once per account, so treat that as an emergency option.
- Store your account token offline. It cannot be recovered or reissued.
Respect rate limits
The limit on STAR SMM Panel is 300 requests per minute per key, and 60 per minute for the profile and post lookups. Batch status checks, skip finished orders, and cache lookup results.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need programming skills to start an SMM reseller panel?
Not for the basics. Panel software handles the API calls; you enter the provider URL and key, import services and set prices.
How much money do I need to start?
Enough for your panel software or hosting, plus a first provider top-up. On STAR SMM Panel the minimum top-up is 10 USD, which is enough to run test orders on several services.
What markup should I use?
There is no single right number. Many resellers use around 2x on higher-priced services and 3x or more on very low-priced ones, then adjust after checking competitors in their niche. Always calculate profit per typical order, not only per 1,000.
Can I connect more than one provider?
Yes, most panel software supports several. Keep the mapping sheet current so you know which provider and rules apply to each service.
What happens if my provider balance runs out?
New orders cannot be sent. On STAR SMM Panel, status and cancel requests also stop at zero balance, so top up before you reach zero.
Can I withdraw my provider balance if I close the panel?
Not on STAR SMM Panel. Balances cannot be withdrawn, which is why topping up in stages matters.
Should I offer refill to my customers?
Only if your provider offers it. STAR SMM Panel does not sell refill services and uses automatic challenge recovery instead, so your policy should describe that, including its limits.
Do I need my customers' Instagram passwords?
No. Orders only need a public profile or post link. Never ask for or accept a password.
How do I check a customer's account or post before an order?
STAR SMM Panel's API includes profile (followers, following, posts, whether the account is private or verified) and post (likes, comments, views for Reels, shares). Checking is_private before sending a follower order can prevent stopped orders.
